What to Expect When First Getting Clear Braces

Published on December 11, 2019

Getting braces, especially clear braces, can feel daunting, and it’s completely normal to be a little anxious. The good news? Knowing what to expect can make the entire experience feel far less intimidating. Here’s what the process really looks like, from the first appointment to the big smile reveal.

When your clear braces are first installed, you may feel slight discomfort a few hours afterward. This mild pain typically lasts a couple of days and may return briefly after each adjustment. Over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough to keep you comfortable. During the first few days, it’s also common to develop small sores on the lips or gums as your mouth adjusts to the new brackets and wires. Warm saltwater rinses can help soothe tender spots, and dental wax can provide a protective barrier to reduce irritation.

You may notice that your teeth feel slightly loose, too. This is expected and actually a sign that the braces are doing their job. Your teeth need a bit of mobility to shift into their ideal positions. Once treatment is complete and the braces come off, they’ll feel stable and strong again.

Your diet will need a little adjusting at first. Soft foods like mashed potatoes, yogurt, cheese, and lunch meats are your best friends early on. Even though sandwiches seem soft, the sticky texture can make them tricky to manage. As your treatment continues, you’ll also want to avoid foods that can get stuck in your braces, such as popcorn, caramel, and chewy candies. Hard foods like nuts and raw carrots should be skipped too, as they can damage the brackets and wires.

Regular orthodontic appointments are a big part of the journey, typically every eight to ten weeks. These check-ins ensure your teeth are shifting properly and allow your orthodontist to catch any issues before they become bigger problems. It’s also a great time to ask questions, mention any discomfort, and restock essentials like dental wax, rubber bands, or cleaning tools.

One thing braces don’t restrict is your lifestyle. You can still play sports—just wear a mouth guard for protection. If you play a wind instrument like the saxophone, clarinet, or tuba, you may need a little time to adjust, but you can absolutely continue.

Most patients wear their clear braces for one to two years, depending on the complexity of their case. Some treatments may be shorter, while more complex adjustments can take longer. The actual installation procedure itself is completely painless thanks to effective local anesthesia, so you’ll walk out of the clinic with no discomfort at all.

And the best part? The results. When your braces come off, you’ll be greeted with a confident, refreshed smile you’ll truly love. Many patients even say they look younger once treatment is complete.
